ON STAGE

PART 1 // 13:00-13:45

Welcome by Professor Philip Dean, Head of Media Department

DELILAH Project

Context: Ongoing Vocoder research

Description: The DELILAH project presents a media-archaeological model of voice encryption as a method to protect privacy while still speaking in the public sphere, based on the technology of the vocoder. The vocoder entered popular culture largely through the “robotic” vocals of the Kraftwerk album “Trans Europe Express” (1977). However, it’s history is rooted in WWII-era communications technology which was later “hijacked” into the world of electronic music.

Pixel Polizei

Context: Just some free experimentation

Description: Pixel Polizei is a tool for the retro artist. It lets you automatically check whether an image conforms to the color limits of a particular oldschool platform, such as the Commodore 64, and save the result in certain native formats. The underlying idea is that you can use whatever paint program you happen to prefer for creating the images and observe – almost real-time – if you’ve made a mistake somewhere. The tool is multiplatform and open source.

The Interactive Diorama

Context: The project consists of a virtual reality simulation composed with elements from Rembrandt’s artwork “The Anatomy Lesson by Dr. Nicolaes Tulp”. The work aims to bring together the tradition of spectacle as has been present in the History of Science through the development and use of Anatomic Theaters and the tradition of the Narrative Painting. The intent of this project is to investigate and develop a new research method that brings together design and visual art and new media. The project conducts basic research to develop a two-stage collaborative auto-ethnography method in which personal histories in the form of “reconstructions of life” created by researchers working in a trans-disciplinary context and from an artifact-oriented perspective are used as point of origin to launch a process of inquiry. The method includes a process whereby subsequent interviews by a second researcher are used to gather additional information and further refine initial narratives created by the informant author. One of the intents is use the data collected in the creation of visualizations, including personal information representation graphics that enable storytelling performances.

Description: There will be a general introduction about the project describing what it is about. Afterwards a short demo video (around 2 mins) showing the working process and multiple user tests with the working product.

Darkroom Mansion, a mobile game for The Finnish Museum of Photography

Context: A mobile game for children about what is a darkroom and what’s done in there.

Description: The Darkroom Mansion game is quite unconventional, as it was born from a desire to innovate in a non-gaming environment. This environment being the traditional and institutionalized art museum. It is also unconventional because the production was started without knowing what the game is about, except that it should involve the darkroom, and the funding was acquired based on a very vague general idea. It is probably also the first and only mobile game in the world by a photographic art institution.
